About
With an accordionist grandfather and a chorist singer mother, Pierre-Yves grew up surrounded by a rich cultural environment. In addition to folk-Celtic music, he maintain strong links with the Breton diaspora in the USA, which made him very sensitive to soul music and rhythm'n'blues. After studying piano, cello, electric bass and percussions Pierre-Yves opts for double bass at the age of 15. He first studied at the Brest conservatory and then moved to Paris to devote himself fully to music. A few years of intense learning followed, during which he continued his musical studies, notably with Jean-Baptiste Pelletier for double bass and Jean-Michel Bardèz and Bruno Plantard for writing and analysis. In Paris, city of jazz, he rubs shoulders with American legends like Sunny Murray, Georges Brown or Sunny Simons in the underground Studio des Islettes de Barbès and participates in the master-classes of Jean-François Jenny-Clark, Ron Carter and Larry Grenadier. In 2000, he obtained "full scolarship" to study at the prestigious Berklee music college in Boston but after a short stay in the US marked by precious meetings and strong musical experiences, Pierre-Yves chose to not integrate the school and returns to Paris to develop personal and original projects mixing jazz, world music and electro. Through groups like Sayag Jazz Machine, Teknic Old Skool or Odeia, with the recording of numerous albums, he became one of the most active double bass players on the French scene. Today, with his new trio Rue de Tanger Pierre-Yves is committed to reinventing music that is both anchored in Parisian jazz musette and turned towards rhythms from the Maghreb and Orient vibes.
